La atención prehospitalaria urgente se presta a través de dispositivos diversos que cubren las 24 horas. Medicina de familia atendió 17,8 millones de consultas urgentes y enfermería 10,2 millones. La frecuentación a urgencias oscila entre 0,11 y 0,83 consultas urgentes por habitante y año a medicina de familia, y entre 0,05 y 0,57 consultas por habitante y año a enfermería. Se hace evidente que tanto médicos como enfermeros necesitan adquirir una formación específica en este campo para que puedan actualizar, identificar y evaluar las situaciones de riesgo vital y proporcionar una actuación inmediata. Tienen que desarrollar habilidades en la toma de decisiones, pensamiento crítico y trabajo en equipo para convertirse en profesionales altamente cualificados para proporcionar una asistencia segura, eficiente y de calidad a la persona, sin dejar de lado, el apoyo y el acompañamiento a la persona y la familia en momentos tan críticos y de tanta angustia.
