This course offers ambitious individuals the opportunity to become designers, designer-makers or textile artists, either within the professional industries or to set up small businesses working independently or in small teams.

Admission is normally based on a good undergraduate degree in a design or media discipline together with an interview. Applicants with a good honours degree in a related discipline and/or with relevant work experience will also be considered. To help applicants â€" especially those from overseas â€" to decide if this course is appropriate for them, it is advisable to contact the Course Director prior to application.
Who is it intended for?
The main aim of the course is for students to identify and develop their own employment opportunities. Possible directions may include textile design, product or fashion design, retail or sales and marketing opportunities, trend prediction and promotion, teaching or further research in industry or education, and/or exhibiting in galleries as a textile artist.

- Fashion design· Trimester 1
The emphasis in trimester 1 is on the development of ideas: Delivered through a taught programme of lectures, seminars, group critiques, and assignments Research Methodologies introduces generic methodologies and considers subject specific data retrieval analysis and evaluation techniques. Through The Development of Product, Market Research and Product Ideas you will negotiate a programme of study developing ideas technically and aesthetically, and applying in-depth investigation into techniques and researching the chosen market.
Trimester 2
During the second trimester you’ll take two modules: Marketing Skills comprises of lectures, seminars and research and is about developing relevant professional skills and understanding of marketing requirements for textile designers, makers and artists Negotiated by each student, Product Sampling and Development and Research involves initial product sampling techniques and investigation, range planning and the development and progression of ideas to product level.
Trimester 3
The final trimester involves a further negotiated major study. This practice-based Master’s Project is about bringing ideas to a professional conclusion often in the form of an exhibition of finished work and supporting promotional materials.
Part time students follow the same sequence of modules, but do so over seven trimesters (or 28 months).
Course assessment
The PG Cert is assessed by studio exhibition and/or portfolio presentation with a marketing assignment. The PG Dip involves a written report including market analysis of your chosen product field. Practical work is presented by studio work and/or portfolio and an evaluative report. For the MA you will present a cohesive body of creative work, supported by an extended report.
