Engineering Science encompasses a vast range of subjects, from microelectronics to offshore oil platforms. The course involves the application of creative reasoning, science, mathematics (and, of course, experience and common sense) to real problems.
The Department of Engineering Science at Oxford has a top-level quality assessment rating for teaching and a world-class reputation for research.
Civil engineering is about shaping the built and natural environments in which we live. It is a broad discipline that improves many aspects of our everyday lives, from the provision of safe drinking water to the development of earthquake-resistant structures, while also protecting our natural environment.
Electrical and electronic systems are central to everyday life: this generates a national and international demand for specialist electrical and electronic engineers educated to a high level. The MPhil in Electrical and Electronic Engineering has been designed to enable students to acquire advanced and specialist skills in the broad spectrum of areas in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Electrical and electronic engineering is a fast-moving field with several sub-specialisms such as digital electronics, micro-nano fabrication and nanotechnology, RF electronics, space electronics, communication systems such as wireless and optical, VLSI design, power electronics, quantum computing and communications, sensors, embedded and control systems.
If you're not sure which area of civil engineering you want to go into, this broad-based course is a good choice. The first and second years introduce the core disciplines of structures, water, geotechnics and environmental issues. In the third year, you'll work as part of a team working on a realistic engineering design project.
Our Civil Engineering BEng equips you with the skills to tackle real-world engineering challenges through hands-on, multidisciplinary learning. Covering structural design, transport systems, earthquake resilience, and environmental engineering, this programme prepares you for a dynamic career shaping the built and natural environments in an ever-evolving world.
Our engineering courses focus on project-based activities, giving you lots of opportunity to work in teams on projects from design to implementation. This will give you practical experience of applying engineering science to real world problems, working in multidisciplinary teams to develop your interpersonal skills, and prepare you for a key aspect of modern engineering practice. Problem solving and project management are key skills for an engineer, and our focus on practical experience will help to improve your skills in these highly sought after areas.
This degree spans everything from designing semiconductor chips, circuits and motors to building complete communication and power systems. Informed by our world-leading research and shaped with input from industry, it will give you the skills and experience to launch a successful engineering career.
With our innovative blended learning approach and specialised placements, you'll emerge as a confident and competent midwife. You'll champion the human rights of women and newborns, providing personalised, safe, and transformative care.
