SYLLABUS

Transport and distribution are of crucial importance to our economy and society, and are being brought sharper into focus with issues such as congestion and public transport in the news virtually every day. Our Transport Management programmes examine the economic, operational, societal and environmental issues related to the transport and distribution industries.

Subject guide

Our programme is designed as a general management degree, using examples, illustrations and case studies from the transport and distribution industries. Your studies will incorporate all the relevant management skills: accounting, marketing, human resources and operations management. All are set within the context of the transport related industries, including passenger and freight modes. Your business skills will also be enhanced by courses such as economics, data analysis, operations research, computing and information management.

Learning, teaching & assessment

You will benefit from a wide range of teaching and learning methods, including:

lectures, tutorials and project work
planning exercises, simulations, computer packages
company and site visits
assessment by a combination of continuous assessment, such as coursework and tests (25%) and end-of-year exams (around 75%).
Your final degree classification is determined by your performance in the second and final year.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Graduates who become Chartered Members (CMILT) are eligible to request a CPC National and International in Road Haulage. Following professional experience after graduation you will be eligible for Chartered Fellow Membership (FCILT). Your placement year is fully recognized as professional experience. At the end of the second year, you can choose to benefit from a paid twelve month professional placement. This Optional Sandwich Year, in relevant employment, will be arranged with the help of our placement tutor. We have excellent links with the transport and distribution industry and can offer a wide range of opportunities spanning all aspects of the sector. The placement year can be taken in the UK or abroad and some placement allowances are available. In most cases placement students are offered graduate employment.

Our current and recent placement employers include: Chiltern Railways, Department for Transport, Tube Lines.

Professional accreditation

Both our BSc in Logistics and our BSc in Transport Management are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Graduates who become Chartered Members (CMILT) are eligible to request a CPC National and International in Road Haulage.
